Allys tails.....

gatorsnap5 Feb 03, 2007 01:18 PM

I know I know I know im a dumb ass. okay now that that is out of the way.... i have been keeping my four common razorback's with my three alligator snappers.I have a common AST a pig tailed AST and a hypo AST. now, the pig tailed snapper is fine but the hypo and the common both got the very tip of their tails nipped by i am assuming the razorbacks seeing as how i have a friend who keeps about fifteen to twenty hatchlings together and doesnt have a single problem. i am wondering if the tails will first of all, grow back??? and secondly will the tail tips need to be treated with any thing to avoid bacterial infection? i have very little in my turtles tank in way of clutter so as to avoid waste buildup i have a few fake plants for them to hide in and a ceramic log decoration for them to get out of the water so i think that the water will stay relatively clean but i just dont want to screw this up. any help would be appreciated. and i know that the best thing would be to keep the snappers and the razorbacks separate but right now all i have is my forty five gallon turtle tank. thanks for any help.

It most likely was the razorback. I'm assuming you mean a razorback musk? I had a small common snapper lose about an inch off his tail to a logger head musk that was less than half the snapper's size. Funny, because I was more worried about the musk. It didn't grow back but the good news is that it did heal up nicely without treatment. I did however seperate the two and made sure that the snappers tank was extra clean while it healed up. Also, while the snappers tail is raw at the end it will be even more "tasty" to the other turtles in the tank so you realy need to seperate them. Also, now you have at least one musk who has discovered a new source of food and he's likely to do it again.

yeah i was worried about the musks as well but yeah i guess thats what i get for being a stupid ass and keeping two different types of turtle in the same tank. the only reason that i did it in the first place is because the local pet shop owner told me i could keep them together but to watch out for the snappers getting agressive so i made shure to feed them both equaly so as to avoid any problems such as this... thanks for your input.
