IMPORTANT...MY FROG IS DYING

frog_legs213 Feb 03, 2007 10:44 PM

I've had Todda for 3 years now. I am almost positive that she's a bullfrog. She has not eaten for several months now. It's cold where I live. When she wasn't eating, I thought that it was b/c she was hibernating, until she started to lose weight. Then I got scared, so a few days ago I changed her tank set-up to fully water wtih an underwater heater set to 79 degrees. Still no eating.... Yesterday I bought a UVB light for her (2 percent which it says is recommended for frogs) and still...no eating.
As my last resort, I just started to force feed her. Since she's not eating I mixed into a paste Herptivit and Rep Cal.
In addition, I have not seen her feces for months. If she has something enlarged in her intestines, how long could she live with it there?
Also, she can no longer use her legs on land. One time she was trying to hide in her soil and b/c of her legs, she rolled on her side and just laid there b/c she couldn't get up. Her ankle on one leg is twisted and her other leg is messed up also. Her spine also appears to be curved alittle.

Someone PLEASE HELP ME IMMEDIATELY....

I don 't know much about bull frogs, but what your describing sounds to me like metabolic bone disease. It sounds like its a little advanced. I would put her in a quarantine tank with a water dish or even just water, but not past her head. Keep her warm. The only other thing I can say is to get her to a vets right away. They may be able to help, may be able to reverse the process a little... Good luck.

Thank you for responding back.
Unfortunately I cannot take Todda to a vet b/c many vets claim they know about animals and they end up using your animal as an experiment and a learning process for them. I don't want to see her suffer, but I am her only hope. But, If anyone knows a good "frog" vet in Northern New Jersey, please let me know.

first of all your bullfrog should have had a UVB light allready, did you do any research? read any books/articles before you got it? they all say bullfrogs need UVB light, and not the 2% one thats recommended for amphibians. i don't even know why they sell those bulbs, either UVB light is needed or it's not, there's no inbetween.

oh yeah, your frog probally died from metabolic bone disease which is caused from a lack of natural light, which you didn' t provide it with. it makes it so they can't digest vitiman D which they need for propper calcium absprbtion.

just curious, what did you think would happen when your frog was almost dead and then finally you decided to give her a light (not even a good one at that)? did you think it would reverse it's self or something?
