is sassafras safe?

killr_silhouette Feb 10, 2007 12:22 PM

i know that there are certain types of wood shavings that are not safe for most animals...like pine and cedar...

but i am going to start building my tegu's cage next week, and i was wondering if sassafras is okay to use?...if not, what kinds of wood do you reccomend?

my plan is to use wood for 3 of the sides and the bottom...then i will use a heavy duty wire mesh for the top for airation as well as easier access to heat lamp...and finally, plexi glass sliding doors for the front...

are there any reccomendations?
thanks so much!

I'd ask the folks over on the Cage and Habitat forum! Good luck.

I think you should try to make the top with wood instead of wire mesh. Some tegus tend to jump and cut their snout with the mesh. Maybe you can cut sections for the UV and basking light with a jigsaw and put some small heavy duty mesh. I've never heard of that kind of wood before....sorry. Look up info on thetegu.com under the cage section. Many people use melamine or plywood sealed with polyurethane.
