Best substrate to use?

stingray Feb 11, 2007 10:04 AM

Yes, it does look like this forum is not used much. But I will try anyway. I currently keep other reptiles but I am new to keeping tokays. What substrate is the best to use on tokays?

My favorite is a mixture of peat and soil, a litle sand mixed in works great too. Anything that will hold moisture well. You can buy some substrates at pet stores that work well to, been a while since I used any but Jungle Earth or somthing like that comes to mind.

Thank you for replying. Could I use reptibark?

Fenton Feb 12, 2007 04:02 PM

I now have both Reptibark and coconut fiber in my tanks, and will be using all Reptibark in my tanks this spring when I change all the bedding. The tokays dont seem to ingest it when they lunge at the crickets, and occasionally I see a strand of coconut fiber in their eyes which bothers me.You can also wash the Reptibark under very hot water, let it cool and put it back in the tank.I've always got a 5 gallon bucket of it ready to go.

Is that a good substrate? Ive been using that but am not happy with how it has huge splintery pieces in it.

I am no expert and opinions will vary on substrates, but I would not use the large piece cypress mulch that you get at a garden shop for the very reason you stated. It is an ideal substrate for redfoot tortoises but not for tokays. They do make a smaller piece cypress mulch for reptiles called "Zoomed forest floor bedding" which I think would work great for tokays. Petsmart sells it.
