Need Identification Help

mgl Feb 20, 2007 11:49 AM

Hello,
I friend of mine has a turtle they've had for awhile and not sure of what it is. We are located in Frederick, MD but I don't think/know if the turtle is endemic to the area. Any opinions will be appreciated.

thanks
mgl

It appears to be a mud turtle.

thanks, I was thrown off by the lack of color. This guy is about 1 foot in length, does that sound right?

Your turtle is most likely native to Africa. Do a google image search of "Pelusios" and tell us what you think. There are nearly a dozen species in that genus. Some are more common in collections than others. It's most likely an African Mud turtle. There are several that fall under that name.

That's an African Side-neck Turtle.
