Firebellied Newts Illegal in OR

aphillipi Feb 24, 2007 08:41 PM

I've just found out that Firebellied Toads and Newts are illegal to keep in Oregon. Does anyone know of any other states where this is true? (and WHY?) Thanks!

It's possible that the state could have had an explosion of people releasing them into the wild. If this were true, it could hurt and more likely kill the state's natural species. It could also be that OR has a law about importing exotic animals since many firebellies come from Asia and few are bred here in the states.

In RI, it's illegal to sell Java Moss because some irresponsible people didn't want theirs anymore and threw it into lakes and ponds causing an explosion and hurting the wildlife. It was also true with snails but that ban has been lifted.

In a few years it might not be illegal anymore (if it was an explosion problem).

Marbled salamanders are illegal to keep in RI because they are a protected species in this state whereas in another state you could easily find them available to buy.
