Fire Belly Toad HELP!

xfrogmanx Feb 26, 2007 02:07 PM

I have recently purchased a firebelly toad and everything has been going well. But recently i have noticed that the toads eyes have a kind of light blue blurryness to them now, and before they were plain black. I called the pet shop and they suggested that i wait a day because it could be from the toad shedding. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this. Please let me know. Thanks.

None of my 9 FBTs have ever shed. I didn't even know they did that! Sorry, can't halp you much. Check their water temperature which should be between 70 -75 degrees and their humidity between 80 -100 degrees.

My FBT do shed. Their shed skin generally shows up as slime in the water. If their eyes don't change back, then get worried. On the other hand, my FBT have gold eyes, not black.

Yea, thanks guys I will see how things are tomorrow and if they are still that milky white i dont have a clue what i can do about it, cause the guys at the pet store dont know what to do either they said he might be sheding. Its not a fungus either cause my newt had a fungus and its not the same.

Really? So then, I guess that slime I had in their water a while back was their shedding. Interesting and here I was freaking out at the time. All of mine have black eyes except for one who only has one eye.

Ok the toads eyes are twice as bad as they were yesterday. Their all white now and he isnt eating, usually I would put a meal worm in front of him and he would go right for it, now he just ignors it?? The guys at the pet shop dont know what it is so what do I do??

Usually white eyes means blindness. Have you tried a google search? It would be weird though if all of them came down with it. It must be some sort of illness. Have you tried giving them crickets? Not all FBTs like mealworms all the time and they aren't the best nutritionaly speaking. Sorry I can't help you out more.

Thanks for ur help . I do feed him crickets as well, he doesnt seem to be eating anything, and if infact the white eyes mean hes blind that could explain why hes not eating and which leads me to my next question how do i get it to feed. This is going to be a hard one to solve. I guess i can hold it and try to put the cricket/meal worm near its mouth but i'm not sure if that will work cause the toad is naturally going to feel threatened if i pick it up and shove food in its mouth, i just hope it wil work. Thanks again.

You could try putting him in a small container with a bunch of crickets or worms for a few minutes. Maybe once they start crawling on him, he'll get annoyed enough to snap at them and eat them. I do this with my fbn and he eats.

Eventually, maybe he'll get used to your hand. A couple of mine actually jump into my hand whenever I do something in their habitat.
