Sick Toads????

tenchi88 Mar 03, 2007 01:13 PM

Fatty: Since we got her she's been gaining weight constantly. We got a male and we thought that she might be pregnant but alas no eggs. We don't know if something is wrong with her or if she is just fat, no sites that we've found told us how long fire belly toads are pregnant before they lay their eggs, so that may also be the case, if you know what's up with her please tell us.

Shorty: Every week or so she spits up this white stringy stuff with black dots in it, she seems to choke on it when it happens and we don't know whats wrong with her either, if you know tell us.

Also note, we have another a female and male fire belly toad also in the tank along with a big eyed tree frog and a green tree frog and they all are fine, it's just those two...

Is it possible that Fatty is laying the eggs and the other one is eating them and then spitting them up? FBTs will eat their eggs, tadpoles, etc. Also, what is your substrate? Is it small enough for them to accidently swallow? If so, that could be the problem.

I've got a similar problem with 2 of my females in that they gained weight but no eggs yet. I have an email in to a professional right now about the problem. If I hear back from him, I'll post it for you to read.

Good luck!

The substrate is just gravel, like in fish tanks. they have a log and about 6 fake plants. I feed them everynight at 7 or 8pm and everyone eats fine. I usually dont put more then 10 crickets into the tank for one night. Fatty eats the most out of all of them and the others just catch was goes by. It could be possible that Shorty is eating the others eggs but I've never seen eggs in there before to eat, unless it happens in the dead of the night which could be possible. I don't know.

It could be. It is also possible that Fatty accidently ate some gravel and that it is impacted. You should use something larger than their mouth for substrate such as river rock.

I received my response and he said to watch if they are eating their prey and if they arethen they are normal and probably with eggs. If they are not eating then it might be an internal parasite.
