Brown Snake Questions

jswanson737 Mar 06, 2007 10:46 AM

I am looking for some information on these guys, but am having a hard time finding any care information on them. I guess I am curious about humidity and temperature? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When i had my brown snakes they did fine as they were, n heat (room temp) a water dish, on paper towels, i wasn't checking the humidity but it's normally 50-60% in my house.
you can keep 2-3 in a 10 gallon tank, just provide hides and food and they seem to do well. the next ones i keep though i am going to keep with a heat pad (low heat) more hiding spots and coco bedding or paper towels. Browns aren't much different from corn snakes in terms of their care, so if you need more ideas look up corn snake caresheets (different food of course and less heat)
Good luck

Alright, thanks.

I am looking forward to them, hoping I can keep them eating and in good health, my last experience with small snakes was a pair of Ribbons, one ate the other (of same size) and died itself while choking on the other...

I seem to find at least one every year in my flower beds around the house in a suburban neighborhood!!! Not out in the country or wilds of America LOL!! I show them to the kids and let them go on their little ways. I kept one many years ago that steadfastly ate slugs, but nothing else. It passed away on me and I suspect the reason was dehydration. Not sure of their temp requirements, but based on their lifestyle (shady areas with thick vegetation) appear to be ok with room temps. I would keep a humid side to their cage just to make sure, and an easily assessible and shallow water bowl. They supposedly take worms, but the one I had way back when maybe accepted them once or twice. I had to scour the flower beds in the yard turning over rocks looking for slugs!!! I never tried keeping the ones I have found lately, so very limited knowledge.

I've heard that some subspecies will eat worms and some won't, i know the northern variets (ontario here) that i caught ate worms and slugs, the worms actually made up most of the diet for the ones i kept, then i stupidly let them go, i hope to find a few this spring, but seeing as i only caught one last year my hopes aren't very high. The shallow easy to access water dish is a big must, i used a honey jar lid that i'd have to refill every 3 days because it was so small. the moist hide is also a good idea.

Well, I got these little guys, or girls, not sure yet, they're awesome! I put them in a little tub with moist orchid bark, they seem to bury themselves most of the time. Not too interested in the small crickets, but I got some Night Crawlers, chopped them up, and put them in deli cups in a dark spot, they CHOWED down, funny to see these little guys fat.

Anyways, here's some pics, let me know what you guys think, sold to me as Dekay's Browns, any more opinions would be appreciated! Notice the color difference...

these guys are cool! i had a pair for about 3 years before i let them go. i live in south-east PA and i found them in my yard. they had babies, about 15 if i remember correctly! i kept the pair in a 20 gal. long with no heat, only room temp. i used cypress mulch as a substrate and kept it damp but not wet. they had 3 hide spots;1 cork bark slab that i didn't mist or wet underneath(dry hide spot), another cork bark slab that i did spray under(wet hide spot), and a moist hide box full of sphagnum moss(this is where i found the babys). i fed them worms. i tried slugs, crickets and meal morms, but they only ate worms. be careful not to let them dry out! the babys were only about an inch long and i couldn't feed them so, i let them all go. have fun!

Wow, that's awesome, mine are great, very quick though, I have to be careful when I open the lid that one doesn't excite the other and they both bolt in different directions! I have them on no heat and the substrate is full of damp Orchid Bark, I don't know how they know when I come home, but by the time I get back to the cage, they are both front/center watching, it's awesome! If they end up having babies, I could try some wigglers cut up, see if that works, but it's pretty hot out in AZ, can't imagine letting them go here, unless I went to cooler climate.
