Mountain Horned Dragon missing horns

aphexxepha Mar 10, 2007 10:30 PM

Hi. I recently purchased what was said to be a captive hatched MHD. When he arrived I noticed that his horns were missing. He also has a white spot on the top of his head where it looks like the scales are missing. One other thing; the front of his mouth is always slightly open as if he were giving a kiss. He eats and drinks like a champ so I am going to wait a month or so for him to "relax" before I take him to the vet to have him checked out. I wanted to ask if anyone knows if their horns grow back and also if anyone knows anything about the mouth thing. Thanks.

Hello:
Mountain Horned Dragons are fairly fiesty animals when they are in good condition. I have seen them threaten with the mouth slightly opened on many occasions. You have to be careful though to be sure that the animal does not have a respiratory problem. Weazing and/or mucous in the mouth would be obvious signs of that.
There are many Horned Dragons out there that are missing the spines above the eyes. This is common and i personally have never seen them grow back. If the animal you have is a youngster the horns may not be all the way in yet.
Hope this helps.
Have A Great Day!!!

Thank you for the information. I will watch out for the symptoms you described.
