Ideal conditions to make a toad set in

XavierH Mar 11, 2007 10:55 AM

Hi all ! I just made a little basin in my garden and my goal is to breed some small toads. Since a few days, a toad has established itself im my basin. I just want to know how to create ideal conditions to make it definitely establish in my basin. Thanks

My husband and I had a pond built in our yard which included a filter and a waterfall. We added some plants and before we knew it we had a pair of frogs. We also had eggs and tadpoles from this happy couple.

Make sure you have enough water in the basin at all times.

You have to find out which species live in your locality and plan accordingly. Some species have very restricted breeding seasons and some are opportunists. Depends on where you are. The only toad species I have much experience of here in Europe is the common toad Bufo bufo.It breeds for about only one week in about Late March or early April and prefers huge ponds or lakes. A basin would not do for them. Research your local fauna. good luck
