Dumped Turtles (w/pics)

mssierrak Mar 13, 2007 08:38 PM

I was supposed to be turtle-sitting my friend's turtles, but have now become their permanent mom. I am keeping them in my guest bath tub b/c she had all five in a 10 gallon tank ...

... Anyway, to keep a long story short, I need to find homes for them, but don't know for sure what two of them are. I have my guesses taken from my field guide, but would appreciate some expert opinions (I don't know much about pond turtles). Also, one of them has what appears to be an abscess on her cheek. It has been there since I got her about two months ago. My friend claimed she was going to take the turtle to the vet, but she never even brought food over for them, so I don't think that was ever going to happen.

The map turtles look like Graptemys versa, the texas map turtle.

The top one is a young Yellow-Bellied Slider (Trachemys scripta) the lower one is a False Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica). You are going to need to take the yellow-bellied to a vet and have the ear abscess lanced, cleaned, and started on an anti-biotics routine. Good chance this abscess was formed from poor water quality in that small tank your friend had, so be sure to keep the water extra clear, especially during the healing process. These are very popular pet turtles, so information on their care is abundant in books and on the web.

Good luck

Agreed, slider and map turtle. That slider does need to see a qualified chelonian vet. And I think it's a Yellowbellied x red-eared slider slider cross, not a 100% YBS. I'm not good with the map species, so I can only say a map!

I would be willing to give them all a permanent home if you are willing to ship but it's up to you. They are yellowbelly sliders. and not sure what the thing on the cheek is but I would take it to a vet just to be sure.

Yellow Bellies with a male Map turtle (not sure if it's a false map or a real map, im notta map turtle expert!)
The lump is an abscess, it is realllly painful, it's in his ear so it needs to be lanced, drained and put on a regiment of antibiotics. PLEASE do so! It will not go away.

Thanks to all who replied w/info & offers of homes. The turtles have found great places to stay & Rosie's cheek is being cared for. I miss them, but I'm glad to have my guest bath back.
Thanks again!
