gatorsnap5 Mar 18, 2007 01:12 AM

i have taken care of all of the problems that the last person had with their ast always basking the filter definately dosent make the water too turbulent and the ph is acceptable its around six and i have plenty of things for him to hold onto also there is a common alligator snapper and a pig tailed alligator snapper in with the hypomelanastic the temperature is correct its at eighty to eighty two at all times and they are all feeding regularly and the ast in question doesnt have a respiratory infection that i know of he can swim and he can hang out on the bottom of the tank regularly so yeah i don't know whats the matter any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated.... thanks in advance.

How does he look? Is his breathing labored? How do his eyes look? Are they closed or half closed much of the time? My limited experience with respiratory infection in hatchlings is that you can really tell because they look really bad. The way you describe him, it sounds like you may be worrying about nothing. If he's eating and seems fine otherwise i wouldn't sweat over it.

my AST that basked too much ended up dead, so don't ignore the symptom! they might bask rarely, but it's unusual. other than the basking, mine showed no real signs of trouble until 2 days before he died, when i found that his plastron was very soft and red (blood below surface) and smelled. i looked him over almost daily and by the time he showed real signs, it was way too late. john richards thinks he probably got a really bad bacterial infection, likely from feeder fish.

personally, i'd treat for a bacterial infection with a qualified vet and hope for the best. i know that's annoying bc the vet visit is likely to cost more than replacing the turtle, but it's worth it. best of luck.
