common snappers

SteveH Mar 18, 2007 06:46 PM

I saw two commons in a drainage ditch friday morning. They appeared to be either fighting or mating or both. Their shells were 10". In the evening I went back by the ditch and they were still going at it. 8 hours. So since they weren't locked up I picked both of them up and found out they were males. They both had bite marks around their heads and neck area. The only thing I can figure from this is that common snappers are extremely aggressive towards each other around mating season. Also, here is a photo of my ally snapper in a 40gal. aquariun. I put a tree branch in there and thats where they like to hide.

It's hard to tell from that pic but that kinds looks like an alligator snapper and not a common. Look up some pics of them both and find out.
