HELP! Turtle laid eggs.

peluna Mar 25, 2007 09:43 AM

We have two southern painted turtles that we raised from quarter sized babies in 2002. We never provided them with a sandy substrate to avoid the potential for eggs. When we woke up this morning the bottom of the tank had five decent sized eggs in it. We have no idea what to do now. The male ended up eating one of the eggs (that's how we noticed them in the first place) but we removed the others and placed them in a container with tank water. What do we do next??? Please help!!

Well, I'll leave it to the more experienced in this forum to give you exact advice, but if you want to hatch them, you should get an incubator. A quick Google search brings a load of possibilities. I've also read several postings in these forums about breeding that would help you.
Good luck!

If they were underwater for a long period of time then they aren't any good.
The eggs do drown underwater. Aquatic turtles in the wild come out of the water to lay their eggs, they only lay them in water if there is no choice.
If there are any more eggs to come you need to create a nest box for the female so that she can bury her eggs in soil.. then if you want them to hatch you would have to incubate them.
There's tons of info online on how to go about doing this.
