Some NE Ohio finds...

garweft Mar 25, 2007 03:32 PM

Finally had a nice day to get out and do some field herping. It’s been a long cold winter, and it’s finally nice to get out and see some NE Ohio herps. I only hit one spot for about an hour as I had a full day of errands to run, but seen a few things, one of which was real special.

As I walked along the boardwalk I saw a garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis), however it quickly slithered under the boardwalk never to be seen again. I was a little disappointed as it was the first snake I would see this year, and I didn’t even get to hold it, let alone get musked or bit.

After watching the gartersnake slip out of site I decided to flip a few logs. Under the first one I flipped I found a few red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus). I quickly snapped this pic of a normal red-back and a “lead phase” red-back that I found sharing the log.

I then continued on my way. As I approached an open water area I could hear spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer) and wood frogs (Rana sylvatica)calling louder and louder. Most were either off in the distance, or quickly dove under water, however one did stand still long enough to grab a quick pic.

After photographing the wood frog I looked behind me as a little bit of movement caught my eye. There slowly crawling through the shallow water among the emergent vegetation was a beautiful spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata). I quickly resituated and snapped a few pics of her before she eventually crawled out of sight.

All in all it was a nice day. I didn’t see any smooth green snakes (Opheodrys vernalis syn. Lioclonorophis vernalis), which was one of the species I had hoped to photograph. But seeing a spotted turtle always makes it worth the time, besides I still have all year.

I was actually pretty surprised that I found a queen snake on sunday. I found it at Caesar Creek state park while on a fishing excursion, didn't feel like hiking or I would have been herping too

Thanks for sharing the photos.

Chris

Great stuff! I looked for spotteds today without any luck. I don't remember if I ever emailed you back but those smooth green pics are up on my website. I think you said you wanted a copy of em. I am actually going to be in town this weekend for family stuff and was hoping to get out that way.

I was gone all week on spring break and even missed the spotted salamander migration. I ended up getting a few useful pics out of the few that I took of that green snake. I thought they might have been out of focus, but they were fine. If your going to go out up here sometime, let me know. I never seem to get out enough.

Hello,

Those pics are great; I've noticed many herp-lovers also seem to be fantastic photographers. Anyhoo, I was wondering whereabouts you were for that spotted turtle. Both turtle and smooth green would be lifers for me. I understand herpetologists often only give county information to ward off potential collectors, but any information would be appreciated. The only smooth green site in NE OH I'm aware of is Pond Brook Conservation Area in Twinsburg.

While I'm at it, I'm planning a herp day around Toledo this week and will take any hints for Kirtland's, Blue Racer, Hognose, Butler's Garter, Ribbon Snake, Fowler's Toad, Blanchard's Cricket, etc etc. Yeah, I know...I'm a real pain!

Nice to see you on the forum, Mr. Folt!

You should stop by Ottawa and look for one of these. A melanistic garter.

I also saw quite a few Blandings in the area. I didn't get to hit the Oak openings area as I was with friends on a birding trip. It's warbler season at Crane Creek.

Is that Mizanin as in Mike Mizanin? Just had to ask.

As for the spotted site, if you know Jason you can ask him. He knows where it's at and if he knows you I don't mind if he tells you. I just don't want to put it out on a forum for everyone to see.

Last year I found a black snake, about two-feet in length at Ottawa NWR. It had a whitish chin and keeled scales. It looked nothing like the black rats I was familiar with, so I figured it might be a black racer (which probably don't even occur in Ottawa NWR...maybe blue racers though). But racers have smooth scales, so I ended up settling with "young black rat snake" as my ID. Now I know I was wrong! And according to Tennant, melanistic garters are often found by enthusiasts seeking fox snakes in Ohio's Ottawa and Erie Cos.

I too am a birder, and have been debated going up to Magee/Crane Creek tomorrow, but so far I'm still leaning towards the Oak Openings. I really want to find Hognose, Ribbons, Butler's, Blue Racers, etc...and I think the birding there would be good as well.

Nice pic of the melanistic garter and the magnolia warbler, BTW.

And yes, I'm Mike "The Miz" Mizanin's nerdy little cousin.

Garters also have a single anal plate where black rats and racers have divided anal plates.

The sandy soil areas in the metroparks are great areas for hognose, as well as a few other species like the fowlers and racers. I've been wanting to get back up there but it's tough to get away since I've had a kid.

wow... Mr. Folt... I sure hope I am not that old yet

and I can't believe I didn't put together "the miz" connection...

I will be up in Akron for a few days in the end of June. We should try and all meet up for a day or something.
