Force HL to wake up?

guanabanaboy Mar 26, 2007 11:07 AM

Our DHL was late to go into hibernation this last winter. Also, in December, she started getting up for days here and there. We discovered some kind of mite or insect had hatched in great numbers and we suspected this is what woke her up. We finally got her to go back to sleep, but now it is the end of March and she's still not waking up. We have the ants on hand, since we expect her to really be hungry when she does wake up. Should we just excavate her/wake her up? Any advice? Thanks, Chris

My two cents... Let her sleep unless you think she is very dehydrated or emaciated.

How did you deal with the mite problem? I've had some issues with mites in my outdoor cage last year and I believe it may have caused the early demise of a yearling DHL.
Thanks

We took our HL out of the terrarium, and I sprayed her with a mite killer for reptiles. Then she went into a holding box. Meanwhile I took her terrarium outside and emptied it completely and hosed it out. New sand went in and new rocks and branches also. Then "spikey" went back into her new digs. That night she was back to "sleep" and hasn't really stirred since. Chris
