Phyllomedusa bicolor substrate

UmbraSprite Mar 29, 2007 08:29 AM

I have a question concerning substrate.

I had four of these guys several years ago which I brought back from the brink after import...treating them and fattening them up. Had them for 3 years and they did great. Then I lost all of them within a month of each other...necropsy showed impaction of the moss I was using for substrate.

I have three new animals being delivered soon and am looking for substrate ideas. I will be starting them in a quarantine situation and have a little time but I need something that is soft enough that feeding will not cause abrasions and also that won't be an issue as far as accidental ingestion causing impaction.

Thanks for your ideas...

You could try live, planted moss.

Check over on dendroboard they may have a better response for you.

I would think that live moss might give the same effect. You could try bed of beast, the finely ground cocohusk stuff. But I did have a baby tomato frog die of impaction from that.
I think your best best is to redesign your caging. A taller cage will have them eating above ground if the insects given are introduced higher up. Remember that these frogs in nature will rarely see if ever the ground. I would even suggest going substrateless.
