WHITE baby spotted turtle

spottedturtleman Mar 30, 2007 06:28 PM

This is the third white baby spotted that I have hatched in the last 4 years. None have lived more then 24 hours. I do have the adults and 2.4 babies from the exact bloodline. They will all breed next year so it might be the year.

I'm sorry to hear it didn't live.
Did it have regularly formed scutes, or were there extras?
The reason I ask is because the one posted to the Turtle Forum some time back looked to have extra scutes.

There have been a bunch of hatchling turtles from the former Clemmys complex lately that exhibit aberrant pigmentation. Like yours, they rarely live long. A former keeper at Zoo Atlanta told me that he hatched white Spotteds and Bogs over the years, but none lived. The only aberrant "former Clemmys" that I've heard of surviving is a nearly all white NA Wood turtle possessed by Al Roach. He expects to breed it this year.

Tom, I don't blame you for keeping up with the effort. That would be a truly RARE turtle if you got one to live. It seems that, with your Spotted skills, you've got the best shot. Good luck.

that baby looks underdeveloped. If it stayed in longer, the color would have come in. I hear it's the last thing in development, the colors.

Yup, that looks like a 2-3 week underdeveloped baby. Did that actually hatch out or was it helped along or perhaps forced via egg slitting?
