Ghanaian amphibian

Slaytonp Apr 04, 2007 07:38 PM

My son works and lives in the bush in Ghana. A prolonged drought just ended with heavy rains and lots of mud. These critters appeared all over the place. He says in full view, they are frogs, or perhaps toads, and he calls them Mud Buddies, for lack of even a Ghanaian name for them. (The local natives put them in stews.) I'm usually in the dart frog forum, but just thought I'd share this photo over here. The eyes don't look like any frog or toad I've ever seen, but I haven't researched anything yet.

"Rain frogs" would suit them--it's the only time they're seen. He hasn't sent me a better picture yet.

SE Idaho, near Mt. Borah, Lost Rivers Range. And you?

Has a nice meaning to it. Get on him bout those pics! I wanna see I have a image in my mind, not sure of the species but I am familliar with that look and that snout from what I can make out seems to be a bit long and narrower than most blunt snouts for frogs, looks like something I have seen once before. Not in person of course.

Thanks for your interest. He should be home in a few days for a month or so, so I'll be able to look at all of his photos then, and repost a photo if he has managed to get a clearer one.
