Update For The Glossy Keepers

reako45 Apr 06, 2007 10:07 PM

Recently got what appears to be one of last year's hatchling Glossies while road cruising. After five days of acclimation in my closet, I offered it a lizard (sceloporous) scented pinkie and it ate right away! Needless to say I was pretty surprised.

Hey good news.

Maybe I've mentioned this before, but in any case - a friend of mine has kept a few glossies from time to time from up your way (high desert of So Cal), and he has had great success in getting them (all very young ones) on mice eventually. The one glossy he kept is a fantastic pet snake, and has grown much bigger than I imagined glossies can grow.

In captivity, his glossy will not show itself in the light of day.

He also had some really beautiful baby longnose from somewhere just outside Lancaster area. Those were far more a challenge to get onto mice, and he returned most of them for lack of any success. One switched over quickly. Too bad, because those things can be so attractive in my opinion.

How big are the Glossies kept by your friend? I've got an unsexed adult that I caught as a subadult that is now around 3'. The baby was easier to feed mice to than the subadult (which wouldn't eat for 2 weeks). The baby ('06 hatchling) just ate its first unscented pinkie 4 days ago and I handled it for the first time last night. My Glossies pretty much avoid daylight also, but are active @ night. I don't understand why these snakes are not more popular in the pet trade. Granted some Rosies, Kings, and Gophers are a bit prettier w/ locale specific markings, but aside from that Glossies aren't that different as far as captive care requirements go.
Longnose snakes are one of the snakes I hope to see this year while road cruising. I wonder if whether they'll take mice or not depends on the region they're from. I know there are tons of rodents out in the Lancaster/Palmdale area. Dang near impossible to keep from running overthem while road cruising.
