Slimey Clear Mucus In Tank

piffler1960 Apr 08, 2007 09:54 AM

This past week there has been patches of slimey clear mucus floating in the turtles tank. I haven't seen it come out of them, their nose and eyes seem clear. They are eating like pigs and pooping up a storm. They eat minnows(among other things) so I wonder if the slime is from them?

I had this problem once before as well. The mucus is actually turtle waste. From what i have read/heard 80% of turtle waste is not solid. When it builds up, it needs to be cleaned and have a water change. To prevent the slime in the future you need to break the surface of the water either with a air rock or by breaking the water surface with your filter. I have Fluval 2 filter and i point the jet at the surface of the water to break the plain. I haven't had that problem since. Hope this helps..

Thanks for your reply...right now they are small so they are living in a long plastic tote...I change the water every 2 days, more often if it is real dirty. When they get bigger I'll do the filters and have a better set-up. They haven't had any slime since I last posted.
