red eyed tree frog questions??

whp102 Apr 13, 2007 11:37 PM

I am not a frogger, but I am interested in some info. My wife works in a first grade classroom, and they are studying the red eyed tree frog. The teacher asked her kids if they had any questions, and they came up with two that she could not answer. I did my best to find the answers on the internet, but that specific of info seemed difficult to locate. If any of you frog type guys/girls out there could help out, that would be great. 1) How long are there legs? 2) How far can they jump? (Best guess on question one was 2.25 inches to 3.75 inches, no clue on question 2.) Thanks for helping out the little ones!!

Well question 1 is a bit difficult to answer, mine don't stay still long enough to measure them! But they are quite longer than you'd think, I'd estimate that on my female (bigger than the males) her body is about 2 1/2 inches or so and her legs would be around 5 inches totally outstretched. The males would be probably 1/2" or so shorter as are their bodies.

As far as jumping, they could jump several feet, but mainly climb like a a monkey, thus the nickname monkey frog. They would jump to escape danger and also in establishing territory.

I'm going to attempt to affix a picture here, it is of my female climbing about, you can see the incredibly long length of the legs.

Hey, Thanks so much for your help!! Much longer than I would of thought. (I was just trying to scale the lenth of their legs to the lenth of their bodies in photos found on the internet. Had no way of guessing on their jumping skills. Thanks again. P.S. The image you tried to attach came though fine on my end.
