Jamaican Anolis in captivity.

Jay W. Apr 15, 2007 11:31 PM

Howdy,

Curious to know if anyone is actively working w/ A. garmani in captivity. I've been considering this species for a long time, but have yet to take the plunge. Any special requirements?

Thanks,
JW

Hello:
Over the last couple years I've raised three of these guys. They are relatively easy to keep but really prefer to be kept in taller terraria rather than in terraria that have lots of floor space. They spend much of their time on the vertical perches in the terraria. They also feel more secure if a couple of those perches (or one anyway) have some kind of leafy vine attached to it so they can perch and be hidden. A nice Pothos plant would work fine for this.
As far as food is concerned they are a lot less picky than Knight Anoles. They will readily feed on most types of insects and may even go after a little nectar mix as well. Their nice green coloring makes them a very good looking terrarium resident. They also appear to be a little calmer with human activity around them than Knight Anoles.
As usual though they must have access to water to keep from being dehydrated. This seems to be a recurring problem to most species of Anoles. I sprayed mine in the mornings every other day plus had a water dish for them. An airstone in the water may be a plus as well.
Hope this info helps.
Have a Great Day!!!
