Is there an easy way to distinguish the Northern water snake (Nerodia)from the Asper Boa, (Candoia aspera aspera)? When I see them in pet shops they look similar and I’m at the mercy of a clerk.

The most obvious difference between the two is that the boa has a much shorter, stouter body, whereas a water snake is longer and thinner. The asper will also have a more triangular head shape than the water snake, in general.

...and a recovering rescue ball python.
Terry-an even easier way is to look at the eye pupil-the asper's is, of course, elliptical-in contrast to the Nerodia's round pupil.

Thanks, Brad. Kurt doesn't have a good grasp on snakes yet.
