Pics and question about cages

dragonfruit_85 Apr 18, 2007 07:10 PM

I havent been on in a while so I decided to post some updated pictures. This is (Tango or Tweek?) my 2 year old Arg. from Agama. He is over 36" long now, and a few pounds heavy. He's in a 6'X 2'X 2' and I'm going to start building a bigger cage. My question for you do-it-yourselfers is: Can I use "Great Stuff" foam in a can as a sealer for the cage if I cover the inside completely and then shape into rocks, or should I seal it as well? Enjoy the pics! Thanks!

You might be able to use it as a sealer for the edges but not for fake rocks.A tegu could shred those in no time with their sharp claws. In fact he might be able to shred it as sealer too.

i like to front, with the tree leaf effect, cool!

i'd cover the foam, even though GS breaks down in time, and make rocks. here 's mine:

God he's so cute! I wish mine was a baby again. I cut it out with a jigsaw and then sanded the edges. This was my second cage I built but it was the biggest so I am a little scared to be building an even bigger one. I figure that by the time it breaks down I can build another cage anyway. He scratches a lot though so I would have to reinforce the front of the cage with something. Thanx for the picture, he's real cute!

Don't use greatstuff as a sealant. It sucks at doing anything near that... It is safe to use as a background however. Dart froggers have been using it for years.

To make a non shred-able background do the following:

1. Lay down layer of greatstuff for background.
2. Let cure for about a week to be safe.
3. Carve to your liking. This step isn't very important.
4. To make the background unable to be shredded and look like rock, you must cover it in a hard rock-like substance. Purchase a bag of tile grout of your desired color, or concrete dyes to change its color.
5. Next you must get the grout at least semi-sealed before it can be used. When mixing your grout to apply to The background, instead of water use Quikrete Acrylic concrete fortifier. You want the consistency to be like runny dough.
6. Apply sparingly (just enough to cover the foam) and shape as needed. This will cure with a fan in about 4-5 days. This method can make truly stunning backgrounds.

Sorry I posted a while after your initial post :\
