Observations of Ahaetulla sp. Fishing

N_Arms Apr 21, 2007 11:24 PM

I was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium checking out their asian vine snake enclosure this afternoon. I was unable to indentify the species but there was definetly a mix. Anyway, it was fascinating watching the smaller species (Ahaetulla frontacincta, I think) hanging from the bamboo and snatching little gobbies from the water below. I am soon to acquire 4-5 Ahaetulla prasina and I was wondering if any of you guys have observed this fishing bevaior in the prasina or nasuta species or have witnessed this behavior at all with captive vine snakes.

Cheers,
Nick

Mine will fish occasionally, but usually they drop the fish before eating it. It's like they are attracted to the movement but don't like the taste once they grab it. Here is a picture of a neonate eating a fish, sorry for the bad quality and yes, I am now aware that it's not a good idea to feed them goldfish.
