the venom ban be dangerous if you are allegic to it, they will usually eat rodents in captivity, and they need a huge enclosure(4 feet high,3 foot long, 2 foot wide would be the least amount of space i would even think of for these snakes) also they are canbilistic so they shouldnt be housed together, and if the law says venomous it would include mangroves since they are venomous. but i have been in a few states were venomous snakes are illegal to keep but i saw rear fangwed snakes for sale in that state. mfezi.com has some forsale by the way hope i helped

so could they be fatal if you are alergic??

beladona Apr 23, 2007 07:37 PM

im 16 would this be a bad choice for a first hot i have handeld about 5 copperheads very saftley and hafe hooks tongs and all necasary equitment and would not plan on regularly handling

they are rather agresive. and it could be fatal if you are allergic.if you are prepared to get a mangrove and know what you are doing......do it
alot of places wont sell hot snakes (including mangroves) to any under 18 but they can sell it to your parents........

I'm also sixteen, and I currently have a Mangrove snake in my possession. You have to keep in mind that if you are bitten by one, it could be very serious. Their venom is very potent, but no fatalities from it are known. They are also very aggressive and wil rarely tolerate handling. The hardest part of their husbandry is acclimation, but I would recommend you buy one of those from mfezi as they are feeding on mice already. If you are ready for one then I would say go for it! If you would like I can e-mail you a caresheet for them which I have been working on. Contact me through my e-mail( it's in my signature)!

I was bitten twice by my mangrove. Second time he managed to inject venom. My arm swelled up a bit, and I was a bit nauseous for a day. The fact that I was only tagged twice was a testament to luck. He was SUPER vicious. He would strike at the glass anytime someone walked in the room. Absolute psycho.

As for legality, in California, you need a permit for venomous, but rear fanged appear legal.

Royreptile Apr 25, 2007 04:29 PM
