Philodryas viridissimus

Oxyrhopus Apr 23, 2007 11:54 PM

Here's my 4 foot female. Unlike the baroni and other Philodryas species, this species is eager to bite. I really like their blue chin and blue specks between the scales. Notice how in the top photo with her flatten head that she is telling me to back off or else.

Does that one have a bad bite? I will assume you will try and find a mate for it? High on my list. Very nice Dan........Bill

I think I've read the subspecies has a nasty bite, however I've been witness to viewing a couple people being chewed on badly and they never had any reaction themselves. Many years ago, I had one barely sink one fang in a finger through a leather glove and it tingled a bit and itched etc and swelled very little and it was interesting how that tiny fang made it through the leather gloves. And I do have a mate for it and its a matter of next year to fatten this gal up and hope she came in gravid from the wild in the first place.

And get ready to crap your pants as I was successful to breed my Siphlophis compressus and believe she is gravid with 2-3 eggs.

Congrats on the gravid snake. That species is one of the sexiest out there, right up there with the Blue Coral.

I have a book by lamar that shows a viridissimus bite the hand is swollen all fingers and has a blue cast to it. I know there has been fatalitys from at least one species of Philodryas.

Dan, I would imagine that a full grown male Philodryas viridissimus must top out around six feet if you have a four foot female? Your thoughts.

I have not seen any over 4 feet long and perhaps this female is the longest I've the opportunity to view. Consult with others has not indicated that the sub species grows much larger but perhaps it tops at 4-6. I saw that picture you mentioned and have that book actually and have not seen similiar reactions in the individuals that were nawed upon several times. But regardless, I always manage them with respect and utilize hooks and gloves when moving them to clean their cages.
