introducing a new greek

ErinD Apr 24, 2007 08:16 PM

I have a 7 year old male greek tortoise, app. 7". I recently acquired a female who is about 5" long. I had her checked for parasites, mycoplasma, etc. and she checked out fine. Does anyone have any experience introducing a pair? I'm concerned by the size difference and afraid my male may be too aggressive in pursuits. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi,
I know you've had her checked out, but if she's WC I'd wait at least 3 months and 6 months would be better.
Another thing is they may not be the same subspecies of Greek tortoise. If your male is CB or WC from 7 years ago he probably won't be the same subspecies that are coming in now.
The last thing is, the female isn't adult yet no matter what subspecies. She really doesn't need the males attention until she is and that would depend on subspecies.
If you could post pictures I'd be glad to help identify them both. I'd need plastron, carapace and head shots.

I know my male is CB. He was a gift to me me a couple of years ago from the person who has his parents. They had to "thin the heard" due to space constraints. The person who gave me the female was unsure of her origin, but suspected that she was WC. I was planning on waiting until June at least to introduce them. Hopefully by then, my little boy will be less"amorous". I'll take some photos of them this weekend.
Thanks,
Erin
