Found this fellow...

Right in front of the garage tonight. It was getting pretty dark and my camera wouldn't focus, but does anyone know what species/subspecies this is? I'm in North County San Diego, by the way, dry mountainy desert kind of area. Inland about an hour from the beach, and about an hour away from San Diego itself.

Thanks!

I rediscovered the guide I like to use for the species around here and it's a Southern Pacific. Thanks much :D

That is definately a southern pacific rattlesnake. And a nice looking on at that. They tend to be real quiet and passive, usually not rattling when found or even moved. However will bite with lightning speed if touched. Nice find!

That one just sat glaring at us until my Mom pulled up in her diesel truck, lol.
The day after I saw that lil guy, I saw this speckled in the road right before our driveway. Had to take pictures as I shooed her off the asphalt, lol.

Nice to have such pretty animals right in your front yard.

Wow,
I wish I could find a speckled in my front yard. All we get are choloes. However I once did see a choloe with freckles. You could say he was a speckled.

LOL,

I believe that would be helleri (southern pacific rattlesnake), since oreganus range in the mountains up by kern county.
