Two Alligator Lizards - Laying On Top

Liquid_Metal Apr 28, 2007 05:07 AM

I have two alligator lizards that I think they are both females. For sure one is and the other one could be a male. I am not sure but will take a picture and post sometime this weekend.

Anyway, if they are both females, is it normal that they lay on top of each other? The one that I think might be a male is laying on top of the female one at night. Could two females do this too? I will be really happy if one is a male and the other is a female. Again, do females do this with each other?

BTW...Out of those two, I introduced the new one a few days ago when I found it sun bathing. When I put it in, the existing one was chasing the new one around for several hours. The next day, they started to adapt to each other. Yesterday, they started to sun bath next to each other. And today, one is laying on top of the other. I am not sure if that is copulation or they are just trying to keep warm.

So, is this normal behavior since now you seen the pictures of the two Alligator Lizards that I have?

Also, how many babies on average do they have? Do they only breed around March and hatch around May? What about September and so on? Not December right since they hibernate?

Yes - it is normal for lizards to sit on each other.
I'm not sure what the mating season is, but I think it is march to july.

The ones you have look like San Diego subspecies.
I don't know what their clutches are like - if they are like California subspecies - adult females tend to have 10-16 eggs.
