Flagstaff AZ Horned Lizard - need advice

tlowery04 Apr 28, 2007 09:47 PM

found this little guy in my school parking lot, I've heard conflicting advice on whether or not to feed it ants or not, given the climate and elevation etc. looking at it I beleive it to be of the rock horned lizard variety, and he really likes to sit on my shoulder in the sun while I'm sitting outside.

so what is the best food to feed him? does anybody know?

what kind of habitat should i provide for him? rock and sand? greenery? woodchips and needles?

If i am unable to provide him with an adequate habitat in the next week or so, I will be taking him up the mountain to let him go in the woods with my other tree lizard,

Thanks everyone!

do you have a picture of this HL?
unless it is a short horned lizard
ants must be provided for it in order for it to be in good health
and as for substrate its hard to go wrong with sand
but it must be clean and parasite free
you should check out www.phrynosoma.org to help you determine the species and how to care for it

I was told 10-15 crickets every 2 days would be a good start, also I have noticed his belly and lighter colors in general have a tendency to get lighter or darker, does anyone know about this occurance and why he does that?

thanks all

it looks like a short horned lizard
phrynosoma hernandesi
crickets should be ok for him but he'll also need ants harvester ants or carpenter or tree ants
and his colors change could be a few things
possibly his mood and stress
or it could also be to absorb more or less heat
many lizards do that to regulate body temperature
