Is that typical of the coloration of Spotted turtles there? If so, they are exceptionally pretty. You are a lucky man, as herps seem plentiful in your study area.
Yeah I'd have to agree they are beautiful specimens. Is the water the are in have a high iron level, the appear to have a rusty stain to them. What state is this?
Those colours are fairly atypical and it all depends on where the animal is found. Yes, some of the more mineralized bodies of water can cause that "rusty" colouration.
These are Canadian spotteds.
Thanks, Ken. Unfortunately, I can count on one hand the number of places in southern Ontario where herps remain diverse and abundant.
What kind of camera do you use, canon slr?
As much as I would like to shoot with an SLR, it is impractical for me in the field. Photographs are usually the secondary directive. Most of the photographs I post are shot with a Canon S3IS.
