Savannah breeders in ontario?

Incipient_Incide May 02, 2007 10:38 AM

I lost my four year old savannah two years ago to a lizard sitting accident (essentially, from what we can peice together, the woman who was taking care of her for me while I was on vacation didn't properly lock the door to her enclosure). I've been thinking about getting another since then, since I absolutely adored my first.
Unfortunately a well meaning friend recently surprised me with the gift of a baby columbian black and white tegu, which is not really what I'm looking for... frankly, I just want another savannah.
My last one was purchased from a small scale reptile store in a teeny little town that's now out of business, or I'd simply go back there.

Does anyone know of any reputable sources for savannahs in Ontario? Preferably within six hours of Toronto?

I can't say I know of any offhand. Not sure if you checked out the reptile expo in Missassauga on Sunday (April 29th). There typically are savs there. I don't know if they are captive bred or not but definitely can ask the vendors if they are. If you did miss that show, there is another one in Kemptville (near Ottawa, which is within 6 hours drive of Toronto, probably about 5 hours) May 27th. Or, you can go to the next reptile show in Missassauga June 24th.

I would love to have a black and white Tegu, I find they are the coolest looking monitor like lizard out there. But, I can't keep them in Ottawa, against the bylaws...sigh. Nor do I really have the room in my apartment for one (but I would make room if i was able to get one). Tegus can make great pets too, but if you are not interested in them, then best to find him a good home and get what does interests you.

You can also check local reptile rescues, often they may have unwanted savanahs. These may require a bit more work to tame down etc nor will they be all captive bred but can still make rewarding pets.

To find a rescue in your area, just look up to the big banner ad with the tabs, underneath it on the left, there is a little search field to search rescues.

Thanks for the info. I do know that the little tegu came from the reptile show in april; unfortunately she didn't get any info on the breeder which means I can't even contact them. I am finding him to be an interesting little guy, but what can I say? I've got the savannah bug. *laugh*

Thanks for the info though! I'll definitely try and get myself to the show in June; provided I can find a home for nameless (I really need to stop calling him that...).

The 'Tegu with no Name' can be a name too LOL.

I didn't make it to the April show (and I am assuming you mean last years unless you only received yours less than a week ago) or at least I don't think so. In either case, in past shows I don't remember who sells Tegus, but I have seen some vendors there with them. PCPC (port credit pet center) may have sold them then, they have a wide variety of stuff.

Actually, we've started calling him 'opie', after the opilio crabs...because he's crabby. *laugh* Yep, it was the one just this last week actually; april 27th was when she brought him to me. She also got herself a giant african millipede (which is neither here nor there really).
She did tell me there were a couple people selling tegus, I know she bought him from someone who was only selling one. I don't even know how much she paid, since I didn't want to ask and seem like an ungrateful jerk. *wince*

Could always ask her if she wants him back for her to keep. I think tegus go for around $200-$400 but i am not sure, haven't really priced them.

Don't know if you have heard of it, but there is a store that specializes in reptiles/spiders/scorpions/fish in Peterborough, which is a couple hours outside of Toronto, called Animalia. I have bought 2 leos there, the animals are well taken care of, and they have a large variety. They have several different species of monitors, not sure about savannah, but they will also do special orders, so that could be a possibility.
