Northern alligator lizard housing

PIG May 04, 2007 02:44 PM

I'm really interested in this species, particularily their inquisitive personality. I was wondering if a 16L x 8W x 11H" (I think that's 5.5g?) tank be okay for them. I know they can get something like 10" long, so it seems a little crowded, but I did see someone mentioned that would be fine as long as they are taken out of the tank frequently. Does anyone have any experience with such a small tank?

One more thing, is a North Central different from Northern?

There are several subspecies of norther, as well as a couple subspecies of the southern alligator lizard that overlap into their range.

Northern Alligator Lizards:

Southern Alligator Lizards that share some habitat with Northern (all the way up into Oregon):

I would use at least a 10 gallon.

Yes, after a bit more resding, I don't see how it could be comfortable in 5g. And thanks for those sites, they're really helpful. I guess I would only get one if I'll be getting a bigger tank.

10 gallon tank is only $10 at Walmart.

These are one of the easiest lizards to keep. My son caught 2 of them last summer and now we have 7 in a 50 gallon tank. One of the ones he caught was pregnant and gave birth to 7 babies. Two were given away. They love to eat sow bugs and crickets dusted with calcium/vitamin dust. Quite active during the day.

Alligator Lizards...easy to keep, cheap to feed, and friendly if you handle them frequently. I have two and am getting two more on Saturday. They go crazy for crickets and are very active during the day. 5.5G would not be okay. 10Gallon minimum for 1-2. Heres a Northern Alligator Lizard breeder...

and they have a forum for Northerns too I believe.
