Painted continues to shed

ketelsen84 May 07, 2007 10:25 AM

I have an almost one year old painted turtle. She's been doing well and growing but is still shedding her skin. Is this normal? It's been going on for about a month now. Also the plastron seems to be cloudy or filmy colored. Everything else seems to be normal and she's been eating great. I feed three varieties of pellets and freeze dried bloodworms. Please help.

Where is she shedding, from her shell or her legs head? It's normal for them to shed skutes from their shells but I'm not aware of any other types of shedding...if so I'd suspect a fungus?

Skin shedding is generally a sign of overeating. I believe
Vitamin A in large amounts can cause this problem.

If you are feeding a variety and the water is clean and
the turtle is otherwise healthy I can say with 95% certainty
that you are overfeeding and thus causing growth which is
too rapid. The scutes on top of the shell will peel off in
sections. It can look really troublesome as they are loosening
because everything gets under them in spots. This is how they
grow.

Hope this helps,
Linda
