How do you keep them out of the cage?

Take a bar of soap and run it along the outside glass of the tank.

How long does the soap trail last on average before you resoap it?

The soap did not work. I lay it on thick but the next morning, dam freaken ants attacked my lizards in full force, almost killing them.
I think I found a trick. I will buy plastic shelves at Walmart. It has 4 legs and each leg, I will place a small freesbie underneath filling with water and a little bit of liquid soap. That should work against those dam ants!

Yes - that should work.
Soap has worked for me in the past though.
Ants though sometimes find their way across water - I've seen them do it. They make a bridge of dead ants that have sacrificed themselves for the cause.

What type and what brand of soap did you use?
I used Irish Spring and that really did not work. I applied it thick on the glass and the base.
As for walking on water, if you add liquid dish soap will break the water skins according to this site.

I don't remember.
It was a long time ago that I used dish soap.
I do know that last summer when I had ants coming in my bathroom *right* before I left town - I put liquid dish soap on the legs of the table, but when I got back - it had run down and was non effective. Fortunately the ant spray I used in the plumbing (where they were coming in from) worked and they didn'y attack the tank.
I do remember that when my mom had ants attacking her dwarf citrus trees, she used some kind of paint or tape on the tree trunk that the ants couldn't climb. Maybe a garden supply store has something that would work better than soap?
