I saw a couple of lizards sunning themselves on my woodpile at sundown today. They are black scaled (prominant, large scales) tipped in orange. They have frilled gills and a squarish head, squat legs. We have lots of skinks around here but they are very unskink-like. Any guesses are appreciated.

Not that the link has a fabulous picture, but seems that NC has Texas Horned lizards, and they fit your description. The photo on the link isn't the same color as you describe, however, they may have a female pictured (it probably goes without saying at this point that males are more brightly colors than females in most cases).
