Hagen Fluval filter leaking!?!?

mimnaugh May 10, 2007 08:02 PM

Hello,
Anybody have this problem?
This is the 2nd time this has happened to me.
My fluval 404 had been working fine, than I moved and had to clean it...now water is leaking from the sides where the handles are. (both sides, but a little more on one than the other) There's no hole or crack. Its a very slow leak, but still! Its so annoying because this has happened to me before and I got so fed up trying to figure out the problem that I ended up just getting a whole new filter. Now just a couple yrs later this one is doing it too!
I've checked everything and as far as I can see there is nothing wrong. I've always been a fluval believer, but this is just pissing me off. These things are too expensive to be buying every 2 years!
Can anyone give me some suggestions or advise? I guess I can go talk to someone in a local pet store, but I always loved this forum and thought I post here first.
Right now I have the filter in a bucket so it wont leak all over the carpet. But what a pain to have to check that every day! Other than the leak, the filter works fine.
Thank so much in advance!

I used to use these filters too but I had so much trouble I just gave up & switched to a Magnum canister.

That's not very helpful advice but after buying so many replacement parts that I could've had a new filter & then all the replacement parts broke too.. I was just too frustrated!

I love my Magnum!

I too, had many problems with mine in the first 3 months. I
replaced it and continued to have problems so I switched
to a different one and have been pleased with it.

Check for cracks in your o-ring. I have used Hagen fluvals on over a dozen tanks over the past 15 years and totally love them. Though I would recommend using two of the 300 models and not mess with the 400 series. I have never owned a 400 series because everyone I know who has had one had problems. I have used the 100, 200, and 300 series with no problems for a long, long time.

I switched to a Rena XP3. It filters up to 175 gallons.
It works well and is a little cheaper than the fluval.

Hope this helps
