What kind of turtle is this?

Nevfalath May 13, 2007 12:34 PM

Hi all. My friend found a baby turtle and was wondering what kind it is. She lives in New Jersey, if that helps. I'll attach a picture of him.

Your friend has found a Northern diamond back terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin terrapin.

Thank you for the response. Someone else told me he is an Ornate Diamondback Terrapin. Are Northern Diamondback Terrapins native to New Jersey? I am thinking some careless owner released his pet into the wild.

It's not an Ornate diamondback. Yes Northern diamondback terrapins are native to New Jersey.

I've heard of them found in the swamps around the meadowlands but I don't know how true that is. I think they may actually be endangered.
