New to amphibians

maskdt May 19, 2007 12:48 PM

I'd originally set up a 10-gallon tank to house African dwarf frogs (I have some past experience with these sweeties), but the heater doesn't seem to want to warm the aquarium past 19 C. I don't feel up to buying a new heater, so I want to try my hand at cold-water amphibians. What amphibians would be good for a beginner with a small tank and a low budget?

just about any newt species will do fine under/at 19C all year long so no heater needed at all. depending on the species size and type you could house 1-4 in a 10 gallon. other aquatic salamanders like mudpuppies, axolotls, sirens, would most likely be too large unless there young

here's a list of a bunch of newt species, some with detailed caresheets Caudata Culture Species DB

and also the caudata.org forums are great for info
