upping humidity levels

bakercl1 May 20, 2007 04:30 PM

I'm getting a baby sulcata tortoise on Tuesday, It's now Sunday. I've been told to house them on straight alfalfa hay, but i've also been reading a lot about needing high humidity levels. What would be the best way to go about increasing the humidity and also the best substrate in your opinion.

Most people provide a humide hide and let the animal choose when it wants to be in a humid area. The hide should be something all enclosed except for the "doorway" and you can put moss or a sand/soil misture in it and mist it regularly. There are other ways to make one too, do a google search on humid hide.

I'm actually gonna turn half of the enclosure into a 50/50 mixture of eco earth/organic topsoil, and the other half is going to be a mix of alfalfa and timothy hay for right now. I'm starting to work on the outdoor enclosure sometime soon, i have the bermuda grass and tall fescue seeds ready to go, i just need to start working on the yard and getting it ready to be planted.
