feeding my red spotted (eastern newt)

chrisrolinski May 22, 2007 09:26 AM

I bought my newt about two weeks ago and in the first week ate fine (it used to gulp down the frozen bloodworms and refused the mealworms I tried to feed it). But the past week or so it hasn't eaten at all. How often should a newt by eating? It is quite a small newt - only a few inches long.

Also - I am finding a lot of conflicting advice as to whether these newts are aquatic or not. I keep my newt in an acquarium with a few inches of water with a floating island and a gravel ramp with moss and leaves on (which is seems to be spending most of its time hiding under)

Should I be worried? Because I am!

Oh and double check the proper husbandry and make sure your water is good, test it and if you didnt do any water changes I would start to do some regularly regaurdless of the results.

I'm so awful at making photo's upload, but here is a link to a album I managed to create on facebook.

This should work. There are two pictures of the newt and its tank. Any advice would be appreciated. I have changed the water twice this week and will continue changing it regularly...

Ok I would go out and get a 20L and add some more land sections and water, I noticed there is no filter I would get a slower filter in it some how and try some fruit flys see if that works.
