chinese watersnake?

gorio May 23, 2007 12:39 PM

i found some in a local reptile shop along with retics and acros. the owner was holding it while convincing that it wasnt venomous.. he handled it like a tame garter.. im sure it was a chinese watersnake because of the head shape, belly pattern and i know the difference between nerodias.. how venomous are chinese watersnakes? how big do they get??

and how do you tame nerodias?? the guy has been biting me since day 1

Hi gorio,

E. chinensis are rear-fanged and my understanding is that their venom will basically just cause local bleeding for about an hour. They stay under 30" full grown and are VERY aquatic. Very Hardy easy snakes to keep. Not sure why they are not imported and more popular.

You can check out some pics at my website here:

Hope This Helps

Chinese watersnakes are Enhydris. He's referring to his nerodia.

They can be very fiesty, but mine calmed down--No Problem. So, I really don't know what to tell You. They may calm down--they may not. You may want to contact Mfezi.com and ask about the Rainbow and Plumbea that he had available. And Brian Fry (venomdoc.com) has done some work with them also.
