Baby Sulcata, need help.

bakercl1 May 23, 2007 03:07 PM

I just got a baby sulcata tortoise, and he hasn't been eating that much or staying active. He also dosen't open up his eyes very much. Is this a problem? I've had him for 2 days, and i'm using a n enclosure with a 50/50 mixture of organic topsoil with eco earth on one side, and hay on the other with a uvb light. Is there anything I need to do with my enclosure?

Do you have a humid hide for him/her? It is really important, hatchlings tend to dehydrate very easily (first sign is slugishness/closed eyes) Also you need to soak your new sulcata every other day in luke warm water up to his chin for 15-20 minutes.

Yeah, i have a hide at each side of the enclosure. On one side it has the 50/50 mixture of eco-earth(coconut husk) and organic topsoil it stays within the 60-80% humidity range, and timothy/orchad hay on the other side with a lower humidity range. I soaked him for about 10 minutes or so today. He may still be stressed out though, i've only had him two days and he could still be adjusting. I just want to catch any health problems before they get serious.
