Huge alligator snapper at OKC Zoo

skronkykong May 29, 2007 01:07 AM

This is my first time on this forum, so forgive me if this is common knowledge already. I recently visited the Oklahoma City Zoo and was amazed at the size of the alligator snapping turtle they have on display. In the first picture my girlfriend is standing in front of the tank to give some sort of scale (she's about 5'6). However it was way too dark for that to really work. I've never seen a turtle this big, no toruses or even sea turtles. It didn't say how much it weighed and I couldn't really give a good estimate. I have seen a 96 pounder before and this turtle looked to be about three times that. The shell had to be over 36 inches. It was awesome!

This is the common snapper that's always in the gator area. It I can guess at around 15-30 lbs.

Yes, I have seen one around that size in a Mississippi Museum over near Debuque, IA. I think the shell on that one was nearly 40". It was caged with what they said was an eight foot alligator, and I suspect if it had its head out and its tail straight out, it would have easily been longer than the gator.
