Possible Gravid Slider!

laughingdragons May 31, 2007 12:31 PM

Hi,

I have a female slider that has been trying to get out of their tank for a few days and I think she might be gravid.

What kind of soil or dirt do I need to use for her box?

Thanks,
Jeanette

Also how deep do I make the soil?

I have dealt with a gravid beardie about 4 yrs ago and still have her nesting box that I was going to dig out to use for my slider.

Here's some good info on creating a nesting site for a RES.

Thanks!

I made up a nesting box with potting soil and she dug in it once, but didn't lay any eggs.

Now she just tries to get out of the box.

What other kind of stuff can i use if she doesn't like the soil or do I need to come up with a different nesting box?

Thanks

I believe that the laying media should be 50% sand and 50% organic compost. It needs to have no stones in it, and to be moist. It should also be at least half as deep as your sliders carapice is long, and as big as you can make it. sliders will sometimes dig many holes before choosing one to deposit their eggs in. Here's a link to a RES site where there are many people discussing gravid females and nesting.
