Tokays Incubating Eggs?

howitser Jun 02, 2007 05:53 PM

My tokays have a 1/2 log they spend much of their time under. I just saw what looks like 2 eggs under there with them, and it looks like they're incubating them, they're both spending time actually sitting/laying on top of them!

Is this normal, and/or what affect might it have on the eggs? As much as I'd like to hatch them, I fear if I try to move around their home too much, they'll spook & damage the eggs. Any info is appreciated, as well as the normal incubation time for tokay eggs.

Thanks,

Howard

They are probably just guarding then eggs. Is there many hiding spots and plants in there? They dont actually incubate them. As for times it can be 70 days or it could be up to 200 days depends on the general temp they are kept at. If its about 80 it should be like 90 days though. The eggs are really tough and Tokays are very gentle with their eggs. If they hatch the parents will actually guard they babys as they guard the eggs. Hope this helps.

what your seeing is normal. males and females will watch over and protect those eggs, one will usually stay close by while the other is gone. They will also interact with the hatchlings, when they hatch that is. Tokays eggs are hard shelled and won't break easily by a Tokay climbing on and over them. Like mentioned it can take up to 200 days till they hatch. Most mine hatch out around 100 days and my longest were around 160. You dont need to do anything different except be sure your female has plenty of calcium, she will more than likely lay more eggs around every 30 days in the same spot creating a egg cluster. When you have more than one female they may lay their eggs in one spot and take turns watching their, along with the others eggs. They will not like you getting anywhere near the eggs and will be more vicious than normal if you do. Avoid misting the eggs directly or getting them wet. Keep the humidity good in your setup, mark your calander and after around 90 days start watching for hatchling or signs they hatched like holes in the eggs.
