WC Red racer in Nor-Cal

Pnev24 Jun 05, 2007 01:12 AM

Well my friend just caught a baby red racer and i decided to keep it. I kinda new to racers, right now i have a small hide box w/ a water dish to soak itself in and a few meal worms. its about as big around as a small super worm or very large meal worm. I'm not to sure what they eat or what kind of humidity they need. for substrate i have paper towels. any info on husbandry would be greatly appreciated. Also red racer is the common name around here, from photos i beleive its a sharp tailed snake. Caught in Live Oak California near the sutter buttes.

If the snake you are referring to is indeed a sharp-tailed snake, then it's a slug eater. Go over to the "Small Terrestrial Snakes" Forum, you can find a lot more info over there.

www.californiaherps.com for a proper ID or post a picture for reference.

I have a feeling you've got a western red coachwhip but check the site for details and the photo library there for help.

they eat other reptiles & rodents. Sometimes it takes a little work to get them to eat mice. Do not offer to large of a meal.
